A FEATURE-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND WORK OF CULT DIRECTOR, HAL ASHBY.
Between 1970 and 1979, Hal Ashby’s films collected seven Academy Awards and 24 Academy Award nominations and have continued to influence generations of directors, actors, and film enthusiasts worldwide. Ashby remains, however, relatively unknown to the general public, forgotten in film guides and critical studies. His strident rebelliousness in the face of the Hollywood studio system set the course for an unapologetically original body of work. To date, no filmmaker has made a subject of Hal Ashby or celebrated his work cinematically, despite the quality and influence of his films and the dramatic circumstances of his life.
The overall philosophy of every filmmaker will come through in his films- your basic values, what you think a human being’s rights are, will be there. – Hal Ashby
We want to know Hal, to hear his mischievous laugh and understand the sweet, democratic generosity behind the barefooted man with the long, white, scraggly beard. By using clips from Ashby films interwoven with interviews from principal actors, crew, family and friends, a rare audio interview with Hal describing his process, set against the music from Ashby’s films—ONCE I WAS will present an all-encompassing look at Hal and his work. We will also spotlight Hal’s significant influence on contemporary filmmakers and actors, illustrating his legacy and giving cinematic credit where credit is long overdue.
